Jurrjens Optioned to AAA

Well, I was wrong. Late night news is, Jair Jurrjens has been optioned to AAA Gwinnett. The Braves will announce a corresponding move tomorrow.

According to beat writer Mark Bowman,

“After the game, Fredi said he was not going to make a crazy decision.  Ten minutes later, the Braves made the announcement.”

Seems as if Fredi and the front office are not on the same page with this decision. In fact, opinions and ideas have been all over the map, while being send down seemed almost unimaginable. This situation continues to twist, turn and spiral out of control. It is rare to see a pitcher with so many innings under his belt be optioned down to the minors. It is sad to see Jurrjens struggle like this and hopefully he can get back on track in AAA.

While it is important not to overreact, I think this eliminates any possibility of Jurrjens being moved during the year and possibly being non-tendered at the end of the year. We will find out more news tomorrow.

Mickey Mantle got sent down to AAA once too. Let’s hope he figures it out and can contribute down the stretch.

More recently, Cliff Lee in 2007. After 18 and 14 win season on ’05 ’06 he started 2007 with a 6.29 ERA. He went to the minors and came back in 2008 with a 22-3 record and won the CY Young.

Am I saying this is likely, no. But it has worked that a once good pitcher went to the minors and came back even better. Again, I am not saying this is likely for JJ.

I wasn’t really saying he’ll definitely bounce back, just saying that being sent down isn’t necessarily the end.

I hope he makes enough of a comeback to regain some trade value, or even contribute out of the pen late in the season.
