Braves Select Lucas Sims In First RoundPosted: June 4, 2012
The Braves selected prep pitcher Lucas Sims (@LSims_) with the 21st pick in the first round of the 2012 MLB Draft. Sims is a Georgia product who was committed to Clemson. Instead, he is expected to sign fairly soon with the Braves.
There is no way I could possibly argue with this pick. The Braves scouts know the Georgia area like the back of their hand and have a knack for getting some premier talent in the state. The system also does a great job of developing pitching so it is never a bad to continuously add to pitching depth. Investing in pitching gives them many possibilities down the road with trade pieces, Not many mock drafts saw this pick coming, but that doesn’t make it any less of a pick. I look forward to following Sims, who is a lifelong Braves fan himself.
Baseball America had him ranked as their 29th best prospect in the draft. Talking Chop posted the excerpt from the scouting report on Sims that can be found here. According to Mark Bowman via twitter, he has also reportedly been clocked at 97 this spring. MLB Network discussed that he may eventually become a closer or reliever. It is far too early and would be stupid to put the reliever label on a pitcher coming out of High School. No first rounder is ever a guaranteed sure thing, but they are drafted there for a reason. Here is video of Sims from the 2011 Perfect Game All-American Classic
I’ll update this blog with the next few rounds of Braves draft picks.
