Minor League Signing: Tim SmithPosted: April 28, 2012
The Braves signed Minor League free agent Tim Smith today. Smith formerly of the Rangers and Royals organizations, is an OF who was cut by the Royals this spring. Here is a good article detailing his release along with some quotes. In his minor league career, he has had a very impressive slash line, .305/.371/.456. At 25, he has only reached AA, but has accumulated a .841 OPS in three seasons and a 128 wRC+ last year in 69 games. Along with this, he has carried a 7.8% BB and 14.1% K rate during his career. While his BB% is a bit below average, he still gets on base at a good rate.
The Braves have assigned Smith to High-A Lynchburg. He will likely get himself an everyday spot in the lineup, even with an already overpowering offense. This may signal a few promotions coming from the Lynchburg team, Smith included. He was projected to start in the upper minors again with the Royals, who have a very deep minor league system. It is surprising to see Smith start in Lynchburg with his age and that he has proven to hit in AA. While his health has hampered his ability to stay on the field and help his growth, he is still worth a gamble on. Overall, this was a good minor league pick-up by the Braves.
