Braves Recall RHP Cory Gearrin
Posted: April 24, 2012 Filed under: Minor Leagues, Roster Decisions Leave a comment »The Braves announced today they will recall Cory Gearrin from AAA Gwinnett. This will likely be a one week recall until Tim Hudson returns from the DL. To lay out the rest of the week, Minor will start Tuesday followed by Beachy on Wednesday. After an off-day Thursday, Hanson Friday, Delgado Saturday, Hudson is projected to be ready by Sunday or Monday. If he is unable to go Sunday, Hernandez or Medlen could make a spot start out of the pen and push Hudson a day.
As I pointed out in a previous blog post, Gearrin was one of the likely bullpen replacements during the Chad Durbin discussion. Gearrin has continued to pitch well in the minors and has yet to give up a run. The most likely reason Gearrin was recalled was a combination of a great start, his experience last year, along with the fact he currently is on the 40-man roster. Gearrin was likely to come up at some point this year, so he was eventually going to use an option (*players can only be “charged” with one option per year, no matter how many times they go up and down).
This is a good move because with after Livan going 5 innings last night and possibly needing him for a spot start Sunday, it adds another option and piece to the bullpen. Hopefully we’ll get to see him and his new improved change-up which should make him more efficient against righties.
